Housing for All

Did you know that the recommended amount of money to allocate to rent is no more than 30% of your salary? Sadly, in California, many cannot find living at those rates. California is currently battling a housing shortage as rent and land costs are increasing at a faster rate than wages. Although the problem seems so daunting and impossible to fix, I am happy to let you know that our government has actually made great strides in improving this issue by implementing the Supplemental Development Regulations to incentivize developers to build more low-income housing units. However, these government documents are hard to understand while the U.S Departments of Housing and Urban Development is understaffed and inundated with inquiries, not enough developers are aware of the opportunities available to them. This is why we, Housing for All, want to educate real estate developers on the options available to them under the new regulations. That is why we would like to create a web...

World We Dare To Imagine Post 1

World We Dare To Imagine Post 1 This is a very difficult post for me to write because I wouldn't say I have a simple problem that I have a passion for fixing. As I approach graduation, I have been so focused on my career that I have not given much time to anything else. However, this semester, I am taking a class called "Social Problems" in which I learned a lot about issues or society faces which has sparked an interest in many fields for me. Since I don't have a single passion for me, I wanted to break this post into two things. The first is housing issues, second is our education system. My family is involved in real estate and recent laws have incentivized real estate developers to build more low-income housing. I was pleasantly surprised by this new initiative and I think it is wonderful but there is still so much room for growth. I would love to start a coalition of real estate developers to work alongside the city planners and activists to find the be...

Summer Internship As I approach the summer, I am in the process of looking for summer internships. I have received offers from two companies and it is time to make a decision. I wanted to use this blog post to lay out the pros and cons of each offer to try to clarify which is the better opportunity. I would also love to hear any outside opinions on each opportunity or what other factors you guys think I should take into account. Job 1: The first offer I received is from a construction management company to work as a construction finance analyst on their finance team. This company is headquartered in Boston and I would be working out of their Los Angeles office in West LA. Construction is something that is very interesting to me and a field that I could see myself entering after graduation.           Pros:           - Growing company with opportunity for hire upon graduation.           - Very frie...

Born on Third Base

Born On Third Base Blog Post I am very conflicted with my opinions of this book. In terms of the writing style, I think he is a great storyteller and for the most part it is easy to understand his goal in each sentence and paragraph but he seems to love certain words that I wouldn't define as "plain English" which I have to look up the definition to fully understand the point he is trying to make. One of my favorite parts of what I have read of the book is his use of outside sources and quotes. He cites a lot of other writers in his genre such as Nader and Frank and gives you both their takes and his spin on it. One quote in particular that intrigued me was,  "Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple." He was a very interesting view of the rich from his insider perspective. The part that confused me the most at the beginning of this book was his explanation of the two types of guilt and claiming his does not suffer from...

I've been called a man of no morals, a man of no values. I want to take you back to one of the most scarring days of my life, January 12th, 2017. Before we get into this dreadful day, I would like to take you even further back into 2003. In 2003, my family picked up everything we owned and moved from my hometown of Monterrey, Mexico to San Diego, California. I was just seven years old when my family moved to San Diego and in trying to assimilate myself into the American culture, I quickly realized people love watching and playing sports, specifically Football. Although I couldn't speak English, I quickly picked up the sport of football and used it as a platform to make friends. In addition to playing, I was introduced to the San Diego Chargers and I instantly fell in love. The Chargers became the way I was able to make friends and to me, the sport and the stadium represented the culture which I was getting myself into. I was lucky enough to grow up watching great Charge...

Starting and Managing a Fantasy Football League

Starting and Managing a Fantasy Football League By: Eric Artenstein Today's Landscape in Fantasy Football What is Fantasy Football? It seems like Fantasy Football is taking over the viewership of the National Football League. Fantasy Football has grown to 75 million users across many platforms. Fantasy Football has created a new way to watch the game and has created a community for millions of football fans who do not have a team to root for. In traditional Fantasy Football, you create your own team by choosing players from any National Football League to fill a roster of all different positions. You are awarded points based on individual statistical performances. Instead of rooting for a team to win, people have turned to rooting for players to fill up the stat sheet without any regard for the outcome of the game. Starting Your Own League The three most important aspects to starting your league on the right foot include:      1. Finding the right membe...

Farmer Post 2

Now that I have reached the end of the book, I can say that the book was a good read but not a book that I would choose to read on my spare time. Although the topics can be interesting, I am no interested in being a farmer or even in the process of farming. The positive takeaways that I took from this book is that although I did not love the content, the author is a very good story teller and generally easy to follow. Secondly, Although I do not want to be a farmer, I believe there is a lot of lessons in the book on life as an entrepreneur and how to start a business. One of the main parts that I didn't like about the book is the fact that the story is not told on a single timeline. He took an interesting strategy of splitting up the chapters by types of crops or animals as opposed to writing it in a sequential format. Although this format allowed for great detail on each crop or animal, it was tough to imagine how the farm looked as they time laps overlapped a lot. As a busine...
