Summer Internship
As I approach the summer, I am in the process of looking for summer internships. I have received offers from two companies and it is time to make a decision. I wanted to use this blog post to lay out the pros and cons of each offer to try to clarify which is the better opportunity. I would also love to hear any outside opinions on each opportunity or what other factors you guys think I should take into account.

Job 1:
The first offer I received is from a construction management company to work as a construction finance analyst on their finance team. This company is headquartered in Boston and I would be working out of their Los Angeles office in West LA. Construction is something that is very interesting to me and a field that I could see myself entering after graduation.
          Pros:
          - Growing company with opportunity for hire upon graduation.
          - Very friendly team and good company culture.
          - Interesting day-to-day role with a lot of opportunities to learn.
          Cons:
          - Los Angeles traffic.
          - Very narrow job tied to construction cycles.

Job 2:
The second offer I received is from a real estate investment firm focused on providing real estate for life sciences tenants. This job is located in San Diego, where my family lives. It is an investment internship where I would be working alongside the acquisitions team analyzing new markets and potential investments.
          Pros:
          - A very successful company backed by a multi-billion dollar financial firm.
          - I am very interested in working for an acquisitions team.
          - Located in San Diego so I can live rent free at my house.
          Cons:
          - No opportunity for hire upon graduation.
          - High-stress work.

I am very fortunate and excited to have been given two opportunities. I did not think it would become my choice as to where I work and now it is time to decide one. While there is pressure to decide the right one, it is nearly impossible to know and I feel comfortable accepting either offer. Please let me know what factors you look for when looking at a job.

  1. Both opportunities sound great. But, what is it comes down to is what your future goal is. Both of these internship play different roles in business. One thing I would consider is thinking about what part of finance are you interested in whether it be in forecasting or investing. A good advice to go by is that you first job will not be your last job. So I would chose an internship tailored more towards your interests. I would worry less about the location and focus more on the opportunities they are offering you.

  2. I think experience is that most important part about an internship, I think you should choose the one that aligns the most with what you think you would want to do the most. If it’s the one in west LA then go for it, the traffic will be a small issue in the grand scheme if it allows you to learn what you need and want. Perhaps the San Diego is more closely tied to your interest, I would make sure whatever you do to follow your passion!
